- Do you support all the devices my customers need?
It’s a safe bet we do. We support over 9000 phones across the most popular platforms. We can also generate native applications for seven major device platforms and can recognize many different browser/device combinations which allows us to not only support, but optimize the user experience specifically for them. Current operating systems supported are as follows:
- Android
- BlackBerry
- iPhone, iPod Touch & iPad (iOS)
- Java ME
- Palm Web OS
- Symbian S60, S40
- Do you provide a Branch or ATM Locator?
The Kony platform supports use of native device capabilities like camera and GPS. Kony provides intrinsic support for providing “Location Based Services” like finding the nearest branch or ATM by detecting the user’s location using GPS. This is available as a standard feature in the Application. The Kony Platform offers full support for building augmented reality applications that have the required capabilities which include a camera, accelerometers, GPS and solid state compasses. Augmented reality essentially uses location-based technology to superimpose images and content on top of smartphone camera’s viewfinder. The overlaid information can include information about a bank’s or credit union’s branch or ATM location, or even details about a promotion at a given physical location.
- Kony must be Lowest Common Denominator.
Unlike most other vendors that “dumb down” their mobile offerings to the lowest common denominator to support multiple mobile device platforms, the Kony Platform transforms a single, non-platform specific application across three delivery formats – on-device applications, device optimized mobile web and SMS. The platform then generates the binary runtimes for all supported rich client platforms and automatically delivers the appropriate download to the requesting device. The Kony Platform provides multiple mechanisms that allow applications to take advantage of specific features or capabilities of a device platform, while maintaining a single code base.
- Platform specific properties
- Platform specific rendering
- Platform specific skinning
- Platform specific code execution
Using a combination of these mechanisms, applications can be developed that provide specific functionality only on certain platforms. For example, an application with iPhone push notification support will completely disable the UI and code required to register for the push notification and any screen elements that may show information from the push on other platforms. The Kony Platform also supports extensibility, by allowing for addition of platform-specific custom widgets as required.
- HTML5 can do all this. Why do I need Kony?
HTML5 is an important, yet emerging standard, which Kony fully supports. There are many devices that do not support HTML5, nor does HTML5 have complete support for many devices. Kony allows you to bridge that gap. Additionally, with the Kony Platform, what is developed is portable across access methods, since it is all delivered from a single code base. This means that applications you deploy now that may not be in HTML5, can easily be re-deployed in HTML5, thus future-proofing your investment.
- We only want mobile web (or iPhone app, etc.)
While mobile web is widely supported, there are variants based on form factor and device platform that Kony allows you to accommodate, and even take advantage of. For example, rather than deploy a one-size-fits-all mobile web application, the Kony Platform allows you to publish device optimized mobile web applications, providing the native look and feel particular to certain devices. This enables you to provide the best, device oriented user experience, all from a single code base.
- Why shouldn’t we wait to do something?
An investment in the Kony Platform now, positions you to incrementally expand your offering as you develop your strategy. Many organizations have already deployed a mobile solution, we can help you get one to market while you refine your strategy. Our platform allows you to easily modify and extend applications to support your needs as they grow and change.
- Are you an offshore company?
Kony’s core R&D resources are located in India where high quality, technical staff are readily available. Customer facing staff such as sales, marketing and professional services are located in country to better facilitate customer interactions and understand local requirements.
- Do you do this all with an army of professional services?
A typical implementation takes approximately 10-12 weeks. This short timeframe is due to the unique capabilities of our solution and its ability to allow developers to produce cross platform applications with minimal effort, rather than an army.
- Can I customize the application?
Absolutely. Our applications, while complete and fully functional as they are, are reference implementations that are meant to be customized to your specific needs. Our drag & drop oriented, graphical IDE, Kony Studio, can be used to modify the look, flows and functionality to meet your need. You can even develop completely new applications with it and/or expand platform support, without having to learn the platform specific language. We can also provide training to your staff. We have a concept called “skins”, which represent the various form factors and device types available on the market. These skins are customizable in that not only color and branding can be changed, but even the placement and style of buttons and other functional aspects. In addition, the properties of these widgets can be modified, and even vary by device type, allowing you the utmost flexibility. Skins can even be copied, with the new copy being modified so you can have multiple variants of the same skin.
- Can I access my enterprise systems/custom functionality?
Our Platform gives you complete control, allowing you to incorporate custom connectivity adapters for legacy systems as well as leverage custom business logic. In cases where the enterprise back-end does not expose a standard API, the Platform provides the ability to develop or deploy a custom java connector.
- How will you support my customizations going forward, release after release?
Kony produces releases that are backward compatible, so existing code should not be impacted by newer releases. Some implementation work may be required to take advantage of new functionality introduced by a new release, but this would be at the discretion of the customer.
- How do I manage my application after it’s live?
Using Kony Studio, developers can make changes to existing applications and simply re-publish the application code, which it can also distribute through application stores. The platform supports detection of optional versus mandatory updates and, given the proper circumstances, allowing the user to defer the installation to a more convenient time.
- You talk about mobile applications and mobile web, most of my customers don’t have smartphones. What about them?
We support SMS based applications in addition to mobile web and downloadable applications. As a matter of fact, they all share the same logic and connectivity so you can serve all of your customers from a single code base. SMS is simply a different user interface. Additionally, we support delivery of alerts via SMS.
- Your product looks more like a toolkit than a productized solution.
Actually, it’s both because we know one size does not fit all. We used our mobile application development framework to create a productized solution for your industry. We will deliver you the productized solution that’s already been developed and delivered for other customers. As part of that, we also provide the development environment we used to create the application so that it can be modified to meet your specific business needs as well as positions you to extend it as you see fit into the future. This allows you to stay ahead of your competition.
